Beyond Pain, the clinic, was established in 2008 offering targeted physiotherapy services for those suffering with chronic pain. Its success saw us win the inaugural Worksafe Victoria’s Treating Health Practitioner Award in 2011. In 2018, it’s founder and principal practitioner, Anjelo Ratnachandra, was awarded Physiotherapist of the Year by the Australian Allied Health Awards.

Today, it provides a unique consulting service run by founder, Anjelo Ratnachandra, who not only offers individually-tailored pain management strategies for our chronic pain clients, but also tailored programs for a wide range of other chronic illnesses including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS/ME) and Mental Health Disorders (stress, anxiety, depression and adjustment disorders to name a few). He will work with you and your existing practitioners to provide a quality of care that is second to none.

Our approach

Over 2000 years ago, Aristotle said the “treatment of the part should never be attempted with the treatment of the whole, the error or our ways is the separation of the body from the soul…”

Today, this error is still being made. But we won’t. We get that you are more than just your chronic illness, and that’s why we consider the whole you, not just your symptoms.

Our goal is to help you with your recovery, irrespective of whether you have chronic pain, chronic fatigue, or a mental illness and make you stronger and healthier.

We will teach you all you need to know and what you need to do to get your life back (and be a better you!).

Our experience in managing chronic pain, fatigue, and/or mental illness is that group-based programs can be helpful but are not for everyone. Because we are individuals, it’s important to have individualised programs too.

We take the time to listen to your problems and work with you to see what you want to get back to. Then, together, we develop an appropriate program in consultation with your doctor and/or chronic pain specialist (or your chronic fatigue or mental health specialist), that fits with your lifestyle.

Our clients range from busy CEOs, executives, business owners, doctors and lawyers, to teachers, factory workers, retirees, stay-at-home parents and athletes.

Features Of Our Clinic

  • Detailed assessment to understand exactly what you’ve been through. This means listening to you, learning about your pain (or chronic illness), and conducting a thorough examination so that we can formulate the best program for you.
  • Flexible sessions because we understand the challenges of living with a chronic illness.
  • Extended consultations: Up to 60minute sessions as we know that the standard 15–20 minute consultations aren’t adequate for chronic conditions.
  • We cater for all compensable schemes (Workcover, TAC, Comcare etc) and Medicare.
  • We also provide home-based programs for those who have no access to a gym or have mobility restrictions.
  • A tailored program to help you recover from your condition and move on with your life
  • Really understand what’s important to you and what you would like to achieve.
  • Psychological strategies to tackle unhelpful thoughts and emotions.
  • One on one sessions with an experienced therapist who provides ongoing contact after the program if you have any flareups or setbacks
  • We will work with your GP, pain specialist and other existing therapists.
  • Encourage you to bring family and/or friends to nominated sessions to educate and help teach them because research shows support networks are essential for best pain management outcomes.
  • A different type of chronic pain recovery - once you are on your way we can introduce you to a new kind of exercise - Yogaiso - fast, efficient workouts combing the best of yoga and weights for those who are ready.

Our programs are designed to empower you on your journey to recovery. For example, with pain management, effective pain treatments vary between individuals, so it is important to us that we understand your background before treatment.
Often chronic pain, chronic fatigue or mental health symptoms are ongoing, so it only makes sense to design programs for the long-term.
At Beyond Pain we not only aim to treat your symptoms, but also promote recovery and resilience. By the end of your program you will learn, improve and overcome.

Goal setting and enjoyable activities

We believe it is vital that your rehabilitation program is based on what you want to achieve. This way we can help you work towards that. When you don’t have clear goals, you won’t have a clear sense of direction. Once you set your goals, we will help you to achieve them in a manageable way.

Stretch & exercise programs

We will teach you our program and show you how to set the numbers yourself and do them to a level you can manage. This will stop you from push yourself too hard and save you money in the longer term because you will know how to set up a program that works for you. It’s not about pushing, it’s about pacing.

Relaxation techniques

We will teach you different types of relaxation techniques so that you can use whichever works best for you when you need it. They range from short 30 second techniques to the longer 20 minute techniques. Our techniques are also versatile- they can be performed at home, at work or on the tram.

Managing flare-ups & setbacks

We teach you the difference between a flare-up and setback and how best to manage them both. Understanding the difference between them will empower you with the skill to know when you need external help.

Getting a better night’s sleep

Research tell us that good sleep is very important for health and well-being. If you don’t sleep well, your symptoms tends to be worse the next day. So we will teach you some strategies to get a better nights sleep.

Getting into the right mindset

If are getting angry, frustrated, depressed and/or anxious, we will teach you a range of strategies to help you. We understand everyone is different, so we will find what will work best for you.

Returning to work / activity in a helpful way

Having structure in your day and a sense of self-worth is vital in life. If you are at a working age, we will discuss what special considerations are required to support you with your work. We will also show you how to get back to enjoyable activities because for metal and physical well-being- it is important to have some fun!

Intimacy and how to get it back

Often a delicate topic of discussion, but an integral part of life, we will discuss what you can do to help get this back into your life. We understand that everyone is at a different stage of intimacy and we are happy to work around your needs.

Learn how to be heard

By the end your program, you will have a greater understanding and a sense of control of you condition. You may even save on costly ongoing treatments. Most people find noticeable improvement in their quality of life within the first month of treatment.
